The mention of violence, just under the surface, did nothing to dissuade Effie. After all, she'd been avidly watching Johanna's planned transformation from victim to victorious last year just like everyone else. Violence didn't frighten Effie, if only because it seemed like something that could never happen to her directly; it would be like living in the desert and being terrified of volcanoes.
